FloatPen
Rotate your phone upside down to have the clothes come off.
After a night of drinking and laughing with fellow developers at WWDC in San Francisco, FloatPen was born.
It was an attempt at learning motion sensors and animation on early iPhones. It used the accelerometer to detect when the phone was flipped upside down and then animated the clothes coming off. It involved a lot of advanced Kalman filter noise reduction, animation timing, masking, and compositing. At the time, these had just been introduced to the iOS SDK.
FloatPen had that old authentic, black and white look, with (copyright-free) photos and daguerrotypes of both male and female models from the late 1800s/early 1900s. What most people would consider ‘PG’ or tame ‘R-rated’ today. The app, as you might imagine, was rejected TWICE by Apple’s App Store team.
I added strategically positioned fruit and sporting equipment that popped up right as the clothes came off, to hide all the naughty bits. This worked! It made it past AppStore reviews and the app was published, available for 17+ users.
For a brief period, it charted as a Top-10 app in Southeast Asia.
